Buying a puppy can be one of the most pleasing decisions you will ever make.

Buying a puppy

Consider buying a puppy, if you want fun, excitement, laughter and joy in your life.  A pup can fulfill a need and can give you a being to care for if you are alone.  Pups are playful, goofy, and they have a knack for getting into your heart quickly and permanently.  But a pup is a lifetime proposition - at least the length of the dog's life.  It is best not to get a puppy during the special seasons such as Christmas and birthdays.  A pup will be fearful in new surroundings and if they are loud and boisterous times with too much going on for proper care and attention of the pup, it could be harmful to the pet's integration.  If you have considered all the ins and outs of pup ownership, then you are in for a life changing experience.

Doggies require considerable care from the beginning to the end of their lives, which could be up to 15+ years.  It is important to consider the type of pup you want as to shape, size, features and temperaments.  There is a huge variety to choose from.  Free puppies can be adorable and are often excellent pets, but it is a good idea to learn the size of the parents and their breed, if possible, to determine whether or not the pups will end up to be the size of dog for your surroundings and situation.  Having children will also be a  determining factor in the best dog for your family.  Some dogs are good around children; some only like to be around one or two people.

After you decide that you are willing to commit your life to a pup, a serious point to consider is your accommodations: are they large or small.  A small dog breed is necessary if you live in a small apartment with no yard to speak of.  Large dogs require a lot of space to live and play.

Pups require a lot of attention.

Puppy house training will be high on your list of priorities.  Housebreaking a pup takes time and patience.  It will take up several hours of your day to housebreak, play with, care for and be a companion to your new pup.  A pup needs to be fed regularly (about three times a day), walked (rain or shine) and they also need some obedience training to learn their place in the home, how to behave around others and to socialize with other dogs.  A pup that is left at home alone all day will develop habits such as chewing furniture, carpets or shoes, barking and crying because it is lonely and housebreaking will be a nightmare. Puppy house training that is sporadic will only cause frustration for the pet and for the owner and could lead to problems between them.

Getting your home ready for a pup, before it arrives is very important.  Some items must be immediately ready for the arrival of the pup.  You must have dog food available, a dog bowl, a dog collar and some dog toys.  Insure you have proper pet ID also.  You will also want to make your place safe for a puppy.  Electrical outlets and cords, chemicals such as antifreeze, sharp objects and items that might strangle a pup such as the plastic rings off a six-pack of beverage cans should be put out of the pups reach.

A place for the pup to sleep is mandatory.  You may wish to teach puppy crate training and have a dog crate or a pet bed placed in your room, close to your bed, particularly for the first few nights.  Pups are usually quite anxious the first few nights in their new surroundings.  Also remember that the new pup will have to be taken out a couple of times in the night if you are housebreaking and again, first thing in the morning.  Be prepared for some sleep-disturbed nights.

You may wish to consider pet health insurance for the new pup, because no matter what you do or how safe you make the surroundings, accidents will happen.  Vaccinations are also needed and as well as a decision to spay or neuter.

With good research and preparation, having a pup and eventually a full-grown dog, will be one of the greatest pleasures of your life.  If you do a good job at puppy training, you will even be able to take your pet dog on vacation with you.  Buying a puppy can be a great experience in itself, enjoy!
