Canine diabetes is a treatable, manageable condition.  A canine with diabetes has not been given a death sentence.

Canine diabetes

Canine diabetes is usually present when symptoms such as excessive drinking and urinating, and weight loss, in spite of a normal appetite, appear.  Canines who have these three canine diabetes symptoms usually have one of the most common endocrine disorders called diabetes mellitus.  Canine diabetes or diabetes mellitus comes in two types.  Type 1 is caused by the insufficient production by the pancreas of the hormone known as insulin and Type 2 diabetes is a result of an inadequate response by the dog to insulin.

Other canine diabetes symptoms including vomiting, weakness in the rear legs, poor skin and coat condition, dehydration, breathing abnormalities, loss of appetite and secondary bacterial infections.  Canines with unregulated diabetes may become blind or have kidney problems develop as well.

With proper canine diabetes diagnosis and treatment, canines can live long and happy lives.

Canine diabetes will be diagnosed after a veterinarian does a physical exam and runs a number of blood and urine tests to determine various levels of: enzymes, proteins and other substances.  The most common and effective treatment available is giving insulin to the canine.  The dog usually remains in care until the insulin has been regulated.  Unfortunately, there is no standards dose for insulin, which can be applied to all animals.  Each diabetic animal has to have its does tailored to its individual needs, which is done over a stabilization period.  After such a period, maintenance insulin doses should remain relatively constant.

Dogs with canine diabetes will be sent home with special feeding instructions once they have been regulated on their insulin.  Your veterinarian will give you specific instruction on the type of food, amount to be given and what times of day you should give it.  All canine diabetes info given to you by your vet should be red and followed to insure your canine's health.
