Canine incontinence may not be behavioral but may require meds.

Canine incontinence

Canine incontinence often leads an owner to dread having their pet anymore.  Cleaning up after an incontinent dog, which was housebroken from the time it was a puppy, is disturbing and embarrassing.  Suddenly, a once loved dog could be considered a "bad" dog and the bane of the household, ultimately to be rejected.

Urinary incontinence in dogs may not be behavioral, but could be medical.  Often a spayed female of middle age will develop urinary incontinence.  Incontinence in dogs often happens during times when deep sleep when the pet is extremely relaxed.  Small or large amounts of urine may be released.  Often it is seen as dribbling.  Another sign is the constant licking of the genital area.  A bladder infection called cystitis could be the cause of incontinence in your pet.  This could lead to worse problems if not corrected.  See your veterinarian.  Cystitis in dogs can be treated with antibiotics.  If the bladder infection is allowed to continue the bladder may become blocked.

Your canine should show no signs of problems with urinating.  If the animal cries out in pain or strains unnaturally, there could be serious problems such as mineral build up in the urethra.  Your veterinarian will prescribe the correct medications for urinary incontinence, dietary changes, and other treatments to correct incontinence problems.

Doggie diapers may be used to help alleviate a situation or as a way to clean up after your pet.

The loss of bladder control in your canine could be the result of old age, injury or infection.  Some breeds exhibit incontinence naturally such as older spayed Cocker Spaniels.  My dog Sadey has this problem, which has been complicated by a serious spinal injury, which has left her unable to feel when she has to urinate.

I have reduced these problems by taking her out more frequently, especially right after she has awakened and using incontinence products such as dog diapers lined with absorbent pads.  The doggie diaper liners help keep the wetness from her, cutting down on the possibility of infections caused by the urine and the bacterial from the saliva transmitted during licking.  There are also dog diapers for fecal incontinence and for picking up the fecal wastes eliminated during a common dog walk.  solution for incontinent dogs

Also available are special beds for nighttime incontinence.

People are beginning to use disposable dog diapers as an alternative to "picking up" waste left by their dogs.  Doggie diapers are becoming popular because many places have laws requiring cleaning up after your dog and impose fines for those who don't.  As dog waste poses a health hazard when left uncollected, particularly in places where people frequent the disposable dog diaper is now a popular item for dog owners.

There are also some medications on the market now for treating urinary incontinence in dogs.  Check with your veterinarian to determine if these are suitable for your pet to alleviate and incontinence that may have medical roots.  Don't dispose of Fido before checking the alternative.  Give the dog a chance and you'll be greatly rewarded with its faithful love.
