Traveling with pets by car can be a happy and stress free experience if you prepare in advance.

Traveling with pets in a car has its special problems to be sure. You may wish to forego the problems associated with pet auto travel by having the pet stay in a kennel or other boarding facility or having a pet sitter take care of the pet while you are away. However, if you choose traveling with dogs and cats here are a few tips for traveling with pets you should consider before you start.
- Make practice trips a week or two before you leave if your dogs and cats are not used to traveling in a car. This will accustom it to the motion and you will then teach the animal how to behave in a moving auto.
- Dogs and cats are most comfortable in some sort of kennel, dog crate or pet carrier. Cats may do better in a pet carrier or small kennel. There are many styles to choose from on the market.
- Pet travel with dogs requires some special rules. They should lie quietly on the seat, keep their heads inside as this can irritate their eyes and cause ear problems.
- Use a seat belt for pet travel - a leash and harness when traveling with a dog is a must. Attach the leash to the seat belt or wrap it around the car's headrest. This allows some movement, but keeps the animal restrained. Important when opening the door so the dog doesn't escape.
- Pet auto travel requires that you have a pet travel kit. The kit should contain plenty of water, the pet's food and treats, a can opener if wet food is on the menu, dishes for food and water, a favorite blanket and toy and some grooming articles: comb, brush.
- If a sedative (prescribed by a vet) is needed for car travel with dogs and cats, make sure it is packed for the trip. Take any medications the pet may require on a regular basis.
- here are many pet friendly hotels and motels, but check in advance. If you are planning to stay in pet friendly accommodations, always bring a scooper and refuse bags, paper towels and possibly a pet deodorant.
Traveling with pets need not be stressful and can be part of the happiness you derive from your pet. Have a great time!
Give the pet plenty of attention as it travels with you and you will be happy you took the dog or cat. Remember, however, the pet that has been traveling with you will need to adjust to the new surroundings, noises, smells and people. Be patient with the pet that has traveled with you and help it adjust with ease. Have a great trip!
